Lance Corporal James Harold Alexander
James Harold Alexander was born on 12 June 1886 at Listooder, Downpatrick, County Down, one of nine children of Presbyterian clergyman Thomas Alexander and his wife Martha Melling (nee Godfrey). By 1911 he was living with his parents and one sibling at Listooder and working as a bank clerk for the Belfast Bank.
Alexander enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 6 or 7 October 1914 (No.1281 – later Corps of Hussars No.71320). He embarked for France with D Squadron on 1 May 1915. He remained with the squadron, part of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment from May 1916, for much of the war.
On 7 January 1918 Alexander was one of thirteen members of the regiment who transferred to the Tank Corps (No.305502). No further details of his war service are available at present.
After the war Alexander returned to work with the Belfast Bank.
